Martin Luther King Day Weekend Events for Maryland Families

This weekend people all over the county celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I found a few noteworthy events for kids and included my picks for the weekend! If you know of any volunteer projects happening that young kids can participate in, please let me know!

Free 4 day event filled with activities for children of all ages! This year’s event will celebrate diversity, unity, and ambition through three projects. Kids will make bird collages, create wishing jars and let their imaginations run wild in the communal coloring tent!
Activities include: Window Art Installation– make a colorful bird collage and contribute it to our ever-growing window display. Wish Jars– make your own beautiful wish jar to take home and inspire you to action all year-long! Communal Coloring Tent— Join the extreme coloring craze as you crawl into the creative coloring tent, crate beautiful designs and make new friends along the way.

I Have A Dream Weekend Celebration

Community comes to life over the three-day “I Have a Dream” weekend celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! Special programs include Doves of Peace, Mr. Gabe Music Show,  Make a Birthday Card for MLK, Baltimore African-American Quilters Guild- Demo and Painting of Squares and much more!

Let Freedom Ring! a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., with Yolanda Adams
Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage

The Kennedy Center and Georgetown University host Let Freedom Ring!, a musical celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, featuring a special performance with Yolanda Adams and the Let Freedom Ring Choir. The 13th annual John Thompson Legacy of a Dream Award during will also be awarded.
Note: Free reserved seating tickets are required and will be given away two (2) per person in line on Monday, January 18 at the entrance to the Hall of Nations beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration
Calvert Marine Museum
January 18
$4 – $9  
Spend a day at the Calvert Marine Museum for Martin Luther King Dr. Day and learn about the Local Legacy of Slavery from speaker Chris Haley. Families will also have the opportunity to write down their dreams and add them to the “I Have a Dream” board.

Kids will move, groove and have lots of music fun. Come join us for crafts, family friendly activities, cookie decorating and more!

Calvert County Libraries
Calvert Library (2:30 -3:30 pm) and Prince Frederick Library (3:30 -4:30 pm)

For kids from kindergarten to 5th grade. Lego enthusiasts will meet monthly to hear a story followed by a Lego building session. Each session will close with sharing time. Legos supplied by library.

Enjoy a great time of storytelling and creative play. Children’s Story Time Pop Up Shop gives the opportunity for children to hear new stories from indie authors, and give parents the chance purchase the awesome new books while experiencing a fun time at the Be With Me The Children’s Playseum.

The Frogs and Black Snake in Frogsville” is an African fireside fable and satire written by American Liberian playwright, theatre director, and actor, Dr. Joe Gbaba. The play seeks to educate and entertain the public about the cultural and historical values of Africa in general and Liberia in particular. it aims to empower electorates to make informed decisions in the exercise of their franchise during elections period. The play is family friendly: it is designed to educate and entertain children and adults alike, and is filled with fun and excitement! All Ages. “$7-$15

**FREE** Arrgh you ready for Pirates. 2:00 pm. Bayside History Museum.
Celebrate the delightful roguishness of Pirates of the Chesapeake. Activities include games, a treasure hunt, and some grrreat history to add to your loot! Seaworthy pirate costumes are encouraged, but not required. Ages 6-10.

EVENING STORY TIME @ THE BLACK BOX THEATRE. 6:00 pm. Indian Head. Drop In.
Story time happens in the evening too! Bring the kiddies to the Black Box Theatre in Indian Head for stories, songs, dancing, crafts and more! Hosted by Potomac Library.

January 21
BOOKS A MILLION STORY TIME WITH THE JUDY CENTER. 7:00 – 7:30 pm.Waldorf. Ages Birth – 5.

January 23
FAMILY JAM and OPEN MIC. 10:30 am – 11:30 am. Charlotte Hall Library. Drop In.
Sing and strum along to some of your favorite songs. Bring an instrument, or play one provided by the library. All Ages.

January 29 – 30
The Little Prince. Times Vary.  College of Southern Maryland Children’s Theatre.
The Little Prince may have returned to his own tiny planet to tend his Rose and look after his Sheep, but for a short enchanted time he returns to us and comes alive on stage. This play tells the story of a world-weary and disenchanted Aviator whose sputtering plane strands him in the Sahara Desert. All Ages.  $7 adults/$5 children
