I’ve been waiting for years for a paint-your-own pottery business to open in Southern Maryland. I’ve been to several paint-your-own places over the years, as a young adult with a group of friends, and as a nanny to create one-of-a-kind gifts for special occasions. Clay Creations in Mechanicsville opened just in time to make beautiful holiday keepsakes to gift to our family!
For those unfamiliar with this type of business, you choose your pottery piece—anything from a mug or bowl to a piggy bank or figurine—and choose a few colors of paint. After painting your piece to your liking, you leave it to be fired and return to pick it up, fired and glazed, several days later. It is a wonderful way for children to create lasting gifts for family and friends, is adaptable to children of all ages, and easily allows children to work together on a project.
During Christmas time, my husband took my daughter to make some Christmas “surprises” for me—though she was so excited she couldn’t help but tell me all about her creations as soon as she got home. The studio is bright and open, and there were numerous choices of objects to paint—with prices starting around $4 (which includes the cost of paint and firing)! My daughter painted an ornament and a small statue for just over $10.
Clay Creations is currently open Monday through Thursday from 11am-7pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am-8pm, and Sunday from 12pm-6pm. They advertise that they also offer private parties, birthday parties and painting workshops. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming events!
