Here’s to a long weekend! There are tons of Black History exhibits that will be open all month long, Black Panther just hit theaters, Disney on Ice is in town and I heard we may be getting snow showers. Get out of the house this weekend and take on one of the picks listed! As always, check with the event host website for updated information!

The B&O Railroad Museum celebrates the contributions of African Americans to the railroad industry. Learn about these men and women who filled vital jobs along the B&O Railroad’s line and understand how significant social issues, such as segregation, affected railroading.

A Walk in Father Henson’s Footsteps

Retrace the footsteps of Reverend Josiah Henson from his enslavement to escape on the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada. Learn about his extraordinary  life, which inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Landmark novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Screenings of the Time Team America documentary: The Search for Josiah Henson at Noon, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 pm.

The Plummer Family: From Slavery to Freedom
February 1-28 
Riversdale House Museum
Adam Francis Plummer, the patriarch of the African American Plummer family, lived at Riversdale. In this exhibit, we recognize the 20th anniversary of the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1998 by recounting how some members of his family successfully escaped to freedom, while others waited for legal emancipation. We continue the family’s stories after freedom and into the 20th century.

Fossil Deposit Interpretation
February 17; 12:00 – 4:00pm
Dinosaur Park – Laurel
Dinosaur Park is a 41-acre park in Laurel, Maryland, featuring a rare deposit of fossils from the Cretaceous Period (144 to 65 million years ago). On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, you can join paleontologists and and volunteers on-site to interpret fossil deposits.
