Unplug and Unwind: A NO-tech vacation for the whole family at Brightwood Cottage

With so many temptations to keep you indoors this summer–video games, tv shows, movies–I wanted to share with you our own little no-tech slice of heaven. Brightwood Cottage is nestled among 100 acres in Madison County, VA. Built directly over a beautiful river, surrounded by trees and farm animals, with not another house to be seen, you will feel the stresses of city-life and the daily commute just melt away. The Cottage offers no television and no wifi, but instead miles of hiking trails, farm chores to help with and clear waters to swim in. Susan Vidal, the farm owner, will spoil you with fresh local meats, produce and juices.

You can choose to start your day by helping Susan with farm chores like feeding the sheep, cow, chickens, geese, letting the horses out to pasture and collecting farm fresh eggs. Susan has acres of farmland to explore–with a vineyard, elderberry forest, even a yurt on the property. A clearly drawn farm map will show you where all the trails lead and which landmarks to visit-like the ancient oak tree. Spend your days swimming and hiking and spend your evenings on the wrap-around deck, stargazing or roasting marshmallows. Bring some family favorite games or books and enjoy a simpler life.brightwood2

The Cottage is equipped with a gourmet kitchen, wood burning fireplace, full bathroom with a shower, and bedroom-with a queen sized bed and two twin sized loft beds. Central heating and air are available for your comfort. The Cottage has been constructed in an eco-friendly manner, with reclaimed wood and allowing abundant natural light.

Our family visits Brightwood Cottage each Thanksgiving, to give ourselves an opportunity to focus on family, to reflect on our appreciation for what nature has to offer us, and to have fun without the distractions that technology can provide. We welcome the chance to disconnect from Facebook, email and television, so we have more time to focus on making meaningful family memories–cooking together, finding treasures out in the forest, catching a glimpse of a shooting star. The Cottage would also be the perfect couples retreat for a weekend away from the kids!brightwood3

The rate is $110/night weekdays and $155/night weekends with a 2 night minimum–and remember that price includes breakfast! To make a reservation call (540) 948-6845 or email Susan at [email protected]
