Pick Your Own Fruit at Great Country Farms

Pick Your Own Fruit at Great Country Farms

Located in Bluemont, Virginia, a little over an hour and a half from Waldorf, Great Country Farms is THE place to spend quality time with the family this fall. Not only does the farm offer wagon rides to the fields where you can pick your own fruit and veggies (or you can just buy the farm fresh produce in the farm market if you’d prefer) but they have an animal viewing area, catch-and-release fishing, jumping pillow, mazes, playgrounds, cow train, wooden farm equipment to climb in, and so much more to keep children and adults entertained all day.

During our visit, several varieties of apples and peaches were in season and available for picking. The wagon ride left conveniently every 30 minutes to the pick-your-own fields. The trees were small enough that our 4 year-old could easily reach the fruit, and there was a bounty of fruit to be harvested! Check the seasonal picking schedule on their website before you go to find out when your favorite fruits and veggies are ready to be picked. The farm market not only offers all of the pick-your-own varieties, but also stocks a wide range of farm grown produce, from okra to grapes, as well as freshly made donuts and popcorn.
Be sure to check the website for upcoming events like the Cider Festival and Fall Harvest Festival, featuring pig races and a pumpkin chomping dinosaur! Price of admission is $8/child and $10/adult during weekdays but grab this Certifikid deal and visit before September 30 for $5/person, which includes 1 pound of apples per voucher! Great Country Farms is open from 9am to 6pm daily.            greatcountryfarms2

Don’t forget your picnic lunch, though the farm store does have drinks and snack items available for purchase and the Roosteraunt is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, offering burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and other baked goods. The farm has a limited number of picnic tables scattered throughout, but if you go during a busy weekend event consider taking your own chairs or a picnic blanket.

Plan to spend the better part of a day at Great Country Farms! From mini-golf to imaginative playgrounds, corn bin to pedal cart track, your children will find a new adventure around every turn. And best of all, all activities are included in the price of admission (the cow train, however, does require a ticket during occasional weekend events). Consider bringing extended family if they are visiting the area over the fall holidays—the farm is expansive but very stroller/wheelchair friendly. There is plenty of shade and benches surrounding the play areas. The farm has a tot playground and corn box for the younger crowd and huge tunnel slides, rope swings, and brain-teasing mazes for the older kids.

Will we visit again? Most definitely! Great Country Farms never disappoints, and puts on new exciting events with each season. Check out the post-Halloween pumpkin smash and the marshmallow harvest around Easter time 🙂
