A Sneak Peak Inside The Wiz at Ford’s Theatre

Don’t Miss the “The Wiz” Playing at Ford’s Theatre

Ease on down the road with the witty characters of the Tony Award Winning musical, The Wiz, at Ford’s Theatre in DC. My mom and I had the honor of being guests at a recent performance and enjoyed every bit of it. Right from the start, the live music, characters and scenery took us to the day Dorothy was whisked away to “The Land of Oz”. We were ready for this unforgettable experience together, just the girls.

Although this was an adaptation to the original musical, you can expect each character to sing their hearts out to all of our beloved songs. Auntie Em started with singing “The Feeling We Once Had” and our heads swayed from side to side. I mean, who doesn’t love this song? As Dorothy journeyed through Oz, we got to meet my favorite character, the Scarecrow. We all know that he didn’t have a brain, but I can tell you that he had more jokes than anyone on stage! His slick and sly remarks kept everyone laughing. We were blown away by the costumes, jewelry, amazing vocals and the references to Wakanda!

Then we had a moment, a powerful moment, where our eyes were fixated on the stage as the dance movements gave us life, the words gave us hope and the beating of the drums seem to set us free. Defeating Evillene took on another meaning for my mom and I.  The energy created a magnificent  connection that took over the entire theater.  Something happened in that song that made the entire audience stand to their feet in applause.

Any Wiz fan or lover of theatre would both enjoy and appreciate the magic in the performances. Although the play is intended for ages 8 and older, I wouldn’t recommend those younger than 10. There are a few risqué scenes that I thought were inappropriate, you know, ones that cause kids to ask questions!  We give the play two thumbs up and a standing ovation. Don’t miss your chance to sing along, laugh and be moved by the iconic musical now showing until May 12th.

Tickets start at just $20 and there are a number of special performance events! Visit fords.org to see the show schedule and ticket information.
