Happy Black History Month!  We’ll be highlighting special activities, sights and icons that celebrate our culture and history. This weekend is just the start with a number of events that will be happening all month long.

Celebrate Black History Month at the B&O
February 1 – February 28
Monday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm & Sunday, 11am – 4pm
The B&O Railroad Museum celebrates the contributions of African Americans to the railroad industry. Learn about these men and women who filled vital jobs along the B&O Railroad’s line and understand how significant social issues, such as segregation, affected railroading.

Valentine Bean Bag Toss

Score points with your loved ones and build a Valentine bean bag toss in this hands-on workshop. Construct a fun bean bag toss game and decorate it with paint and stickers.  Kids receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last.

A Walk in Father Henson’s Footsteps

Retrace the footsteps of Reverend Josiah Henson from his enslavement to escape on the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada. Learn about his extraordinary  life, which inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Landmark novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Screenings of the Time Team America documentary: The Search for Josiah Henson at Noon, 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 pm.

The Plummer Family: From Slavery to Freedom
February 1-28 
Riversdale House Museum
Adam Francis Plummer, the patriarch of the African American Plummer family, lived at Riversdale. In this exhibit, we recognize the 20th anniversary of the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act of 1998 by recounting how some members of his family successfully escaped to freedom, while others waited for legal emancipation. We continue the family’s stories after freedom and into the 20th century.

Blacks in Classical Music Panel
February 3; 1pm
Montpelier Arts Center – Laurel
In honor of Black History Month, music experts will help clarify, solidify and highlight the strong role Blacks have had in the world of classical music, “Past, Present and Future,” as well as the popular idea of adapting a variety of genres into classical music including jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and gospel.

Honoring African-American Contributions in Sport

Southern Region Technology and Recreation Complex – Fort Washington
Join us as we celebrate the many African-Americans who have made a difference in sports on and off the field of play. Enjoy live music, a sports museum, live entertainment, dynamic speakers, vendors, and much more.

Afternoon Aviators: Simulators and African-American Pilots
February 3
College Park Aviation Museum – College Park
Many barriers stood in the way of African-Americans becoming pilots, notably access to education. This month we will learn about African-American pilots who persevered through many obstacles while we try “flying” aircraft from different eras of aviation on simulators.
