Beaches, BBQ’s, and Family Fun!

You know when Memorial Day comes it’s officially SUMMER TIME!!! Many of you may be heading out-of-town this weekend but for those of us sticking around, there is plenty to do. I can’t go without saying thank you to all the brave men and women who served, and still serve, our country.

Friday

Totsicles
Capital Clubhouse – Waldorf
10:30 am – 11:30 am; $7
Ages 2-5
First steps on the frozen surface for children ages 2-5 and an adult care-giver. Explore the ice in shoes or skates. The ice arena is set up with games and activities for self guided fun designed to enhance motor skill development as well as develop comfort with the frozen element. After the ice time participants enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while listening to a story read aloud in our warm lobby.

Mini Manicures
Rotten 2 the Core Kidz Spa – Waldorf
12:00 pm – 8:00 pm
R2C Kidz Spa is still celebrating their 5 year Anniversary! Bring your little one in for a $5 mini manicure. Tell them Moms with Tots sent you!

Friday Night Summer Concert Series featuring the 25th Hour Band – FREE
LaPlata Town Hall Lawn – Laplata
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Family event where Concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, coolers (no alcohol). A play area for children, the Kids’ Zone, allows parents to enjoy the concert while keeping an eye on the little ones. Concessions and an ice cream truck.

Little Jumpers
Pump it Up Waldorf
10:00 am – 12:00 pm; $5.50
Ages 1-6
This special open jump is for our guests aged 1-6 years old only. If you’re worried about older kids running around the smaller ones, this is the perfect time for your little jumpers. Our designated toddler area is for 1yrs-3yrs only. 2 yrs-6yrs are allowed to jump on the inflatables.PIU Complete Logo[1]_full

Memorial Day Commemoration – FREE (Only for those who have base access)
West Basin Marina – Patuxtent
11:00 am
This is a free family event, open only to those with base access. It starts with Colors at 11 a.m., followed by remarks from the Naval Air Station Commanding Officer, a POW/MIA Table Ceremony and a wreath laying. Then, the Naval District Washington Drill Team will do a presentation that will kick off the free American barbecue picnic; drinks available for purchase. There will also be live music and outdoor activities.

Chesapeake Beach Stars and Stripes Festival – FREE
May 23 – May 25
The theme this year is “Korea, the Forgotten War”. The keynote speaker is Maryland’s First Lady Yumi Hogan. William E. Weber, Col – USA – Ret. Chairman, Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation will also be joining us to speak at the opening ceremony as well as later in Town Hall. Sunday’s entertainment headliner is The Fabulous Hubcaps.

Prince George’s Book Festival – FREE

Spring into literary excellence at the Prince George’s Book Festival! Our hope is that you have a fun-filled day with reading, an Authors’ Expo, books signings and other exciting activities.books

Food, games, crafts, pony rides, balloons by the Balloon Nerd and other fun activities to raise awareness about Down syndrome.

Weekend Interpretation on the Farm – Free
National Colonial Farm – Accokeek
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Learn about some of the lost arts of homesteading and environmental challenges colonial people had. Paired with each monthly colonial experience, museum interpreters will be on hand to engage visitors of all ages in interactive activities that help to illuminate some of our time’s most pressing environmental issues.

Art for Preschoolers – FREE

Ages 3-5
Art for preschoolers is for children ages 3-5 where they will learn to appreciate art by listening to an interactive story and then creating a craft related to the theme.

Stargazing Event – FREE
Thomas Stone National Historic Site – Port Tobacco
Daytime viewing – 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm; Night viewing 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm
The Thomas Stone National Historic Site, in conjunction with the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society, is hosting a stargazing party. In the early evening, special filtering equipment on telescopes will allow visitors to see dramatic sunspots and solar flares. Visitors also will have the opportunity to walk through a model of the solar system and to get a feel for just how vast it really is. After dark, visitors will be treated to other views of the cosmos as stars, planets, and constellations dot the night sky.
